About the Markdown Preview
This editor renders Markdown to HTML as you type, with the source on the left and the preview on the right. It uses the marked parser with GitHub-flavored Markdown on by default, which adds tables, task lists, strikethrough and autolinked URLs on top of standard Markdown. The Line breaks option turns single newlines into <br>, as GitHub does in comments and issues.
The rendered HTML is sanitized with DOMPurify before it is shown or copied, so scripts and event handlers in pasted content don't run. Your text is saved as a draft in this browser's local storage and restored on your next visit; it isn't sent to the server. The status bar shows word and character counts and a reading time estimate.
How to use it
- Type or paste Markdown on the left. A sample document is loaded the first time.
- Toggle GitHub-flavored Markdown and Line breaks to match where the text will be published.
- Click Copy HTML to copy the rendered markup, or Download .md to save the source.
Examples
- Preview a task list and table: renders checkboxes and a table with GFM on.
- Preview inline formatting: shows inline code and bold text.
Common questions
Why isn't my table rendering?
Tables are a GitHub-flavored Markdown extension. Make sure GFM is on and that the header row is followed by a separator row such as |---|---|.
Why do my line breaks disappear?
In standard Markdown a single newline inside a paragraph is treated as a space. End the line with two spaces, leave a blank line, or turn on the Line breaks option.
Where is my draft stored?
In localStorage under wmt_markdown_draft, in this browser only. Clearing site data removes it.
