About the URL Slug Generator

A slug is the readable part of a URL that names a page, like creme-brulee-recipe in /blog/creme-brulee-recipe. This generator turns any title into one: it removes accents (é becomes e), spells out letters that have no accent to drop (ß becomes ss, æ ae, ø o, ł l, đ d, þ th, œ oe), transliterates Cyrillic and Greek, replaces & with "and", and joins the words with hyphens or underscores.

Options let you keep or drop upper case, remove common English stop words (a, the, of, to…), cut the slug to a maximum length at a word boundary, spell German umlauts as ae, oe and ue, or keep letters from other scripts. Bulk mode makes one slug per line and makes duplicates unique by adding -2, -3 and so on.

How to use it

  1. Type a title, or switch to Bulk and paste one title per line.
  2. Pick the separator and options.
  3. Copy the slug, or all slugs in bulk mode. The example URL shows how it will look.

Common questions

Hyphens or underscores?

Use hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator, while an underscore joins words, so red_shoes reads as one word.

Should I remove stop words?

Only when it keeps the slug readable. quick-guide-galaxy is shorter than the-quick-guide-to-the-galaxy, but don't drop words that carry the meaning. Short, descriptive slugs work best; keep them stable once published.

Can a slug contain non-Latin letters?

Yes, URLs can carry any Unicode in percent-encoded form, and browsers show them readably. Many sites still prefer ASCII slugs because they survive copying into emails, chat and logs unchanged.
