About the Meta Tag & Open Graph Checker
This tool fetches a page, follows any redirects, and reads the metadata in its <head>: the title, meta description, canonical link, robots directive, viewport, charset, lang attribute and favicon, plus every Open Graph (og:*) and Twitter Card (twitter:*) tag. A share preview shows roughly how the link will look when posted, using og:image, og:title and og:description.
It then lists suggestions: a missing or unusually short or long title (aim for 30 to 60 characters) or description (70 to 160), missing og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url, og:type or twitter:card, no canonical link, no viewport tag, an HTTP error status, and a noindex robots directive. The page's HTML is read as served; JavaScript isn't run, so tags added client-side won't appear, just as they may be missed by link-preview crawlers.
How to use it
- Enter the full URL of the page you want to check.
- Select Inspect tags.
- Work through the suggestions, then compare the share preview with what you expect.
Examples
- Inspect the tags on github.com: a full set of Open Graph and Twitter Card tags.
- Inspect www.example.com: a minimal page with many suggestions.
- Inspect developer.mozilla.org: a documentation site's title, description and canonical link.
Common questions
Why does my link preview still show old content?
Social platforms cache previews. After fixing your tags, use the platform's own debugging or refresh tool to make it fetch the page again.
What size should og:image be?
1200 by 630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio) is the common recommendation and works for large preview cards on most platforms. Use an absolute URL.
Do I need Twitter Card tags if I have Open Graph?
Mostly no: X falls back to og:title, og:description and og:image. You still need twitter:card to choose the large-image layout instead of the small summary card.
